GETTING STARTED

Tweet Chirp Assistant helps you to identify bird sounds in nature.

The application file comes in SEVEN versions depending on the Operating System of the PDA or Desktop.

TweetChirp Assistant requires 20 - 80 MB storage with a PDA using a MEMORY CARD.

The application bundles are:

The specific selection of LISTS and WAVE files are zipped into ONE File - region.zip.

Region.zip contains all of your bird lists and songs.

NOTE:

Region.zip is named as the abbreviated name of the region e.g. CA.zip for CALIFORNIA, ON.zip for ONTARIO etc.

On your desktop create a FOLDER C:\TweetChirp and COPY your application.zip and region.zip files into it.

On your desktop create a SUB-FOLDER C:\TweetChirp\Mobile and UNZIP your application.zip and region.zip files into it.

PDA MEMORY CARDS

NOTE: DO NOT copy your files to the ROOT \ folder of a MEMORY CARD which can hold only 512 files while any sub-folder can hold as many files as necessary.

MICROSOFT OPERATING SYSTEMS

On the MEMORY CARD create a folder \TweetChirp Assistant

COPY all of your application, birdlist and song files

FROM C:\TweetChirp\Mobile on the DESKTOP

TO \TweetChirp Assistant FOLDER on the STORAGE CARD.

FROM C:\TweetChirp\Mobile COPY TweetChirpAssistantHelp2007.htm (this web page)

TO your PDA's \Windows Folder

NOTE:

For TweetChirpDeskTop

In FOLDER C:\TweetChirp\Mobile, Click SETUP.EXE to install application unto the desktop computer.

Then copy all of the files from C:\TweetChirp\Mobile FOLDER to C:\Program Files\TweetChirp Assistant FOLDER.

For TweetChirpLegacy

Attach your PDA to the desktop computer and run ACTIVESYNC to make a connection.

Then in C:\TweetChirp\Mobile FOLDER, Click SETUP.EXE to install the application unto the PDA.

Create a FOLDER on the STORAGE CARD named TweetChirp Assistant.

Then COPY all files on the PDA in \Program Files\TweetChirp Assistant FOLDER to \TweetChirp Assistant FOLDER on the STORAGE CARD.

Then COPY all of the files from C:\TweetChirp\Mobile FOLDER to \TweetChirp Assistant FOLDER on the STORAGE CARD.

CREATING A SHORTCUT (Only for 2000, 2003 and 2005 versions)

Note: TweetChirp2000.lnk, TweetChirp2003.lnk and TweetChirp2005.lnk are in the application packages.

Jot down the name of your storage card e.g. Storage Card, SD Card etc.

Fire up NotePad.exe on the desktop and type in this line

Press ENTER so that the cursor is on the SECOND line.

SAVE the file as TCAonCard.lnk (N.B. Save as Type = 'All Files' NOT 'Text Documents (*.txt)') on the desktop and COPY it to the PDA into Folder \windows\start menu.

NOTE: 53# or 57# denotes the number of characters BETWEEN the QUOTES.

e.g.

PALM OPERATING SYSTEMS

The memory card should have the folder PALM which has a sub-folder Launcher. If not, then re-format the MEMORY CARD.

\PALM\Launcher

From C:\TweetChirp\Mobile FOLDER, COPY TweetChirpAssistant.prc to \PALM\Launcher.

From C:\TweetChirp\Mobile FOLDER, COPY all application, birdlist and song files to \PALM.

A link is automatically created on the PALM PDA for TweetChirpAssistant.prc.

BIRD LISTS

The program works with 'lists' which are text files. Every file name has the SUFFIX BirdSoundsList.Dat while the PREFIX can be anything.

e.g.

PORT HOPE WARBLERS BirdSoundsList.Dat
ARIZONA Thrushes Mimics BirdSoundsList.Dat
Finches BirdSoundsList.Dat

Each line in the file contains

Bird Group Name
Bird Name
Sound File Name

BIRD DIARIES

Every diary has the SUFFIX BirdSoundsDiary.dat or gBirdSoundsDiary.dat.

The prefix can be anything; e.g.

Ray's BirdSoundsDiary.dat
Anne's BirdSoundsDiary.dat
Joy's BirdSoundsDiary.dat
Eve's BirdSoundsDiary.dat

Diaries are text files. Each entry has SEVEN fields DATE, TIME, BIRDNAME, LOCATION, HABITAT, WEATHER and COMMENTS.

MAIN SCREEN

The COMBOBOX at the top of the screen selects the file with a LIST of bird songs.

e.g. SYSTEM All BirdSoundsList.Dat, ONTARIO Warblers BirdSoundsList.Dat etc.

The LISTBOX below the COMBOBOX displays these bird songs.

Clicking on the bird name in the LISTBOX results in the wave file being played.

Using the slider or the buttons below the list box allows the user to navigate the list of bird songs.

There are TWO sets of navigation buttons for left and right handed users.

St - + En <-LEFT RIGHT-> St - + En

A SEARCH FEATURE is present - Find: EDITBOX Go! to scan for KEY phrases.

e.g. owl, warbler, warb, greb, yellow, american, great, jay, blue, bluebird etc.

Enter a KEY phrase and CLICK Go! and the program will search for the 1st instance of the phrase in the LIST - CLICK Go! again and the 2nd instance will be found etc.

There are TWO labels which depict the Number of bird songs in the list and the SIZE of the font used on the list.

There are TWO combo boxes. The LEFT one allows the user to select the type of font and the RIGHT one allows the user to select the INCREMENT for the - and + navigation buttons.

A HISTORY FEATURE is present - Click History then Recall to view your recent selections.

MENU (Legacy and DeskTop Versions)

CLICK Utilites

MENU (For 2000, 2003, 2005 and Palm Versions)

System allows the user to select various functions.

Name/Group - view by name or group alphabetically.
Default List - select a list to start every time.
Bckgrd Color - change background color.
Set Defaults - return to default settings.
Font + - increase size of font.
Font - - decrease size of font.
Help - this document.
About - Developer Information.
Exit - terminate TweetChirp

LISTS

Allows the user to CREATE a new list, EDIT an existing list or VIEW existing lists. The latter function allows the user to delete lists EXCEPT SYSTEM lists.

1. CREATE A LIST

Click 'Lists' Click 'Create List'.

TOP List - select an EXISTING LIST.

MIDDLE List - will display contents of the EXISTING LIST.

BOTTOM List - will display any selections (by clicking on them) FROM the MIDDLE LIST.

The user can DELETE a selection from the BOTTOM list by clicking on it.

Check 'GROUP' then click MIDDLE LIST and ALL birds of that GROUP will be brought down to the BOTTOM list.

Add 'NEW LIST NAME' e.g. Joy

Click 'SAVE' and the list will be saved. e.g. Joy BirdSoundsList.Dat.

2. EDIT A LIST

Click 'Lists' Click 'Edit List'.

TOP List - select HOST from an existing List.
UPPER MIDDLE List - displays HOST list
LOWER MIDDLE List - select EDIT from an existing List.
BOTTOM List - display EDIT list.

Select from UPPER MIDDLE List to ADD to BOTTOM List.
Click BOTTOM List to DELETE an entry.
Check 'Auto Delete' so the user will NOT be prompted.
Check 'Group' to move an entire group from UPPER MIDDLE LIST to BOTTOM LIST.
Click 'SAVE' to save existing EDITED list.

3. VIEW LISTS

Click 'Lists' Click 'View Lists'.

Click a list

Click 'DELETE' that list.

NOTE: SYSTEM Lists CANNOT BE DELETED!

DIARIES

Allows the user to CREATE a new diary, EDIT a diary or VIEW existing diaries. The latter function allows the user to delete diaries EXCEPT SYSTEM diaries.

1. CREATE A Diary

Click 'Diaries' Click 'Create Diary'

Add Diary Name e.g. Eve

Fill in Bird Name, Location, Habitat, Weather and Comments.

Check 'Save 1st Entry' to save this entry.

Click 'Save' to save diary e.g. Eve BirdSoundsDiary.dat.

2. EDIT A DIARY

Click 'Diaries' Click 'Edit Diary'.

Select a diary from the TOP Combobox.

Click 'New Entry' and fill in fields then Click 'Add Entry' to the END of your diary.

Click navigation buttons to make a selection.

Make changes to an entry then Click 'Update' to save changes.

Click 'Delete' to delete an entry.

3. VIEW DIARIES

Click 'Diaries' Click 'View Diaries'.

Click a diary.

Click 'Delete' to delete that diary.

NOTE: SYSTEM Diaries CANNOT BE DELETED!
